The CARINA Final Conference will present the project’s latest findings on camelina and carinata on 14 October 2026 in Brussels or online. Join us to hear farmers, researchers, industry and other stakeholders discuss their future in sustainable farming and bio-based value chains.

What can camelina and carinata offer?

For four years, the CARINA project has explored how two lesser-known oilseed crops,  camelina and carinata, could support more diverse and sustainable farming systems in Europe and North Africa.

The initiative has tested these crops under different growing conditions and examined how their biomass can be used for biofuels, animal feed and other bio-based products. Its work has also looked at the wider conditions needed for these crops and their value chains to develop, including markets, certification and policy.

The final conference “Unlocking the Potential of Carinata and Camelina in Europe and North Africa” will present the main results of this work and look at the practical questions that remain for wider use of camelina and carinata.

A programme focused on results and the next steps

The first part of the afternoon will highlight key CARINA findings on sustainable farming systems, circular biomass valorisation, feedstock provision and certification, as well as the regulatory framework relevant to intermediate oil crops.

The second part will feature two moderated roundtable discussions:

1. The farmer-focused roundtable will explore the factors that can influence farmers’ decisions to grow camelina and carinata, including economic incentives, market access, agronomic support, risk management and policy conditions.
   
   
2. The industry roundtable will look at opportunities for sustainable bio-based value chains, with discussion around markets, investment, innovation and cooperation between different actors.

The programme will therefore give participants an opportunity to hear the latest CARINA findings and engage directly with the issues that matter for future farming systems and bio-based markets.

The conference is relevant to farmers and farmers’ organisations, agricultural advisers, researchers, policymakers, bio-based industries, value-chain actors, certification and sustainability experts, biofuel and biorefinery stakeholders, and organisations interested in sustainable agriculture and the bioeconomy.
