Ministry backs AdaptationHubs as Slovakia builds national climate adaptation platform

The AdaptationHubs project has received an official Letter of Support from the Ministry of Environment of the Slovak Republic. It reinforces the importance of coordinated climate adaptation efforts across governance levels. For the international AdaptationHubs consortium, this represents an important early milestone within the countries which are still missing adaptation hubs.

Implemented in Slovakia by PEDAL Consulting, the project is part of the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change. It focuses on improving cooperation between public authorities, regions, municipalities, experts and other relevant actors involved in climate resilience.

Building the Slovak National Adaptation Hub

At the core of the Slovak activities is the development of the Slovak National Adaptation Hub. A collaborative platform will be designed to strengthen communication, coordination and knowledge exchange between institutions working on climate adaptation.

The initiative does not aim to create parallel structures. Instead, it builds on existing initiatives, expertise and networks already active in Slovakia. Its aim is to help them cooperate more effectively and connect policy ambitions with implementation in practice.

The Hub is expected to support:

  • multilevel governance cooperation,
  • exchange of experience and good practices,
  • stakeholder dialogue,
  • stronger links between national strategies and regional action.

From strategy to implementation

Since the launch of the project, our Project Manager Adriana Čiefová has been actively engaging key organisations and institutions across Slovakia.

Activities carried out in recent months included:

  • coordination meetings with the Ministry of Environment of the Slovak Republic, discussions with self-governing regions and municipalities,
  • and engagement with expert organisations and civil society representatives.

A major milestone was the presentation of AdaptationHubs during the official meeting of the Slovak Working Group for Adaptation under the Ministry. Almost 70 stakeholders from across the climate adaptation ecosystem took part in discussions on future cooperation and governance arrangements.

These exchanges confirmed a growing interest in creating a more connected and long-term approach to climate resilience governance in Slovakia.

A European network connecting 27 countries

AdaptationHubs is establishing a network of National Adaptation Hubs across all 27 EU Member States. The goal is clear – to strengthen cooperation between countries, regions and local authorities facing climate-related risks.

The project also promotes peer learning and cross-border exchange through twinning activities, allowing participating countries to share practical experience, tested approaches and governance models.

For Slovakia, this creates an opportunity not only to strengthen national coordination, but also to contribute to and benefit from a broader European knowledge-sharing ecosystem.
