Unlocking the Future of Forests: DigiMedFor Project Showcases Innovation in Sustainable Forestry

PEDAL Consulting was proud to take part in the DigiMedFor Annual Meeting and Public Dissemination Event, held on 5–6 June 2025 in Kavala (Greece). It marked a pivotal moment for the Horizon Europe-funded project advancing digital innovation in Mediterranean forestry. As a member of the strong DigiMedFor consortium, we joined leading partners, researchers, and regional stakeholders to review progress, share insights, and showcase how technology is transforming forest management.

From Pilots to Replication: Scaling Innovation Across Borders

The Municipality of Kavala opened the Annual Meeting, reaffirming its commitment to digitally transforming the Limnia municipal forest—an ideal demonstration site for forest innovation.

Day one was packed with forward-looking discussions, including:

  • UNINA‘s replication strategy for applying DigiMedFor solutions in Croatia, France, Tunisia, Turkey, and Ukraine. Learn more about pilots and replication sites: https://digimedfor.eu/pilots/
  • ELARD’s planning of replicability webinars to share the knowledge with broader audiences.
  • A deep dive into the Knowledge Platform and immersive, interactive desktop software VFDSS with Cesefor. The forest simulation software enables to blend virtual reality with real-world forest scenarios to improve decision-making.

PEDAL Consulting’s Key Contributions

As leaders of the Sustainability, Uptake and Exploitation Work Package, we were at the forefront of several strategic activities:

✅ Identifying customers for digital forest tools
✅ Co-developing customer value propositions and business models
✅ Analysing legal and ethical frameworks for implementation
✅ Leading exploitation strategy planning and IPR management

We also engaged the consortium in a status-check workshop on Key Exploitable Results and facilitated the groundwork for long-term sustainability of the project tools.

In collaboration with:

  • Deep Blue, who ran a visionary workshop on the future of forestry jobs and skills, inviting us to think 10+ years ahead;
  • CONLEGNO, who progressed with regulatory framework analysis to support future forest policy adaptations.

On the Ground: Where Innovation Meets Nature

The second day featured a public dissemination event, with a hands-on demonstration of Pilot 2 in Limnia Forest.

Participants saw cutting-edge tech in action:

  • Ground-based and remote sensing tools
  • Hyperspectral drone cameras
  • AI-powered ground robots for data collection
  • Object detection in drone imagery

These tools are already delivering impact by:

  • Enhancing timber inventory accuracy
  • Streamlining forest operations
  • Enabling sustainability across the forest-wood supply chain

It was an essential gathering for forest managers, policymakers, researchers, and innovators driving the future of bioeconomy and forestry.
